Document · Information architecture · Proposed v2

A reader-derived top-nav.

The current top-nav is surface-derived — "here are the things we do." The proposal is reader-derived — "how do I find what I want?" Six top-level surfaces. Pro demoted from nav to CTA. See ia-proposal.md for the defended write-up.

Audit

What the current nav does, doesn't, and never said.

Five slots. Two work. Two are confused. Three things are missing. Specific findings below; full audit in ia-proposal.md §1.

Works · keep

Two of five slots earn their place.

  • SessionsDistinct content type, distinct reader mode. Speaker-led online events.
  • ChaptersGeographic, in-person, high-conversion. Different intent than Sessions.
  • ConferenceEarns the slot when imminent. Hides the rest of the year.
Confused · fix

Two slots are doing the wrong job.

  • LatestDoing two jobs poorly — latest issue and discovery hub. Rename to Issues.
  • THR ProA tier sitting next to content categories. Cognitive mismatch. Demote to CTA.
Missing · add

Five gaps. Two are unforgivable.

  • SeriesMulti-part investigations have nowhere to live. Tentpole content, no shelf.
  • DataScrollytelling and datasets sit homeless in the issue stream.
  • Archive"Everything on Talkspace" is unanswerable on the current site.
  • MembersNo saved, no queue, no directory. Pro tier has no member surface.
  • AboutNo author page. The byline is the editorial line — operators want to know who.
02
Masthead

The actual masthead row.

A schematic of the proposed top-nav. Issues · Series · Data · Community · About, with a single green Pro CTA replacing the current Pro nav item.

The Hemingway Report Sessions · Inside the Talkspace re-orientation — live Thursday, 11:00 ET → RSVP
Contextual stripHolds time-sensitive items: live Sessions, conference announcements, series launches. Empty by default.
Issues · sub-navMarkets · Operators · Payers · Field notes · All. Filter, don't browse.
SeriesEach active series gets a landing page with parts in order.
Pro · the only ForestThe brand signature lives here on the masthead. One pill, one moment.
Search · sign-inUniversal search across Issues / Series / Data. Sign-in flips into avatar dropdown.
03

Six top-level surfaces, with their sub-nav.

Rollout

Six phases · highest leverage first.

Phase 1 is a label change and a layout adjustment. Phase 2 is the single biggest change — it creates the surface that The Therapy Layer already needs and doesn't have.

i. Rename Latest → Issues. Demote Pro to right-rail CTA. Hours · zero risk
ii. Add Series top-level. Build Therapy Layer as proof case. Days · highest leverage
iii. Add About → Steve Duke author page. Days · easy win
iv. Add Data top-level. Migrate existing data pieces. Week · medium
v. Merge under Community. Add Members directory. Sprint · requires auth
vi. Site search across Issues / Series / Data. Sprint · search infra
